For my internship project I am creating, planning, and participating in youth group events. The grades of these youth groups are J2 (4th and 5th grade) and NOAR (6th, 7th, and 8th grade). The skills I will need in order for my project to be a success are to be really organized, be very creative, and persistence. The support I will need is from my mentor Gilad Hoffman, because I will be able to bounce off ideas or ask for advise on a certain idea,
One question I have for my internship would be, do the things I learn in school help prepare me for a real job? Some connections I can make between school and internship is that it is a lot of organization and being focus. What school also teaches you is how to work when someone isn't constantly reminding you what you need to do. In my four days their one thing that happened was that it was someones birthday so I got to meet everyone in the office and the other High Tech High intern. I learned that having all the projects that need to be complete should be in your sight at all times, and that it is a major thing to put down where you are at with a specific task when you move on to something else. I am developing my planning skills, especially when it comes to an event for 20 or more people.
The place I decided to intern at is somewhere that I'm familiar with. I choose to do this because I feel like I could get more work down if I felt comfortable with the people I'm working with and already knew them already. What I can honestly say that struck me about my workplace was how comfortable the work environment was. There was no tension between anyone and everyone was friendly.
I thought that all my colleagues were very nice and very funny. They all treated me with respect and didn't get annoyed at me when peer I need something to be clarified. My colleagues treated each other like they were family. The job I'm doing requires me to be very organized which is a quality I have lacked in for a long time now. But what strikes me is that I have been extremely organized this whole time. Granted that it has only been one day I have been organized than I have my first week of school. I'm exited to see how much I can accomplish during my internship. I feel really confident that I can complete every task that I am handed. And the thing I'm most exited about is doing something that will be extremely helpful to the temple. The one thing I worry about is that my I will fall back into my old habits and start procrastinating when doing my work. I hope that since the temple means so much to me that I will not. What are your main duties and responsibilities?
We prepare materials for the coming year, organize files, plan events and all next year school programs and assemblies, order books and materials, interview and hire teachers, inventory materials on hand, email families, schedule camp events and other summer events. I research new ideas in education, update curriculum and research new materials on the market. What is your job title? Director of Religious School Education. What skills and training are necessary for your position? I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision plus many hours in Jewish studies. Why did you choose to work here? I moved to San Diego and was lucky to find a job at Beth Israel that was very much the same position I had in Phoenix for 23 years. How did you end up doing the job that you do? I became very committed to Jewish education when my children were starting in religious school and started as a volunteer. I loved that I could make a difference and was a part of something I felt was important. I had a degree in accounting and was working in a CPA firm, but wasn’t feeling connected. Teaching and then administering a religious school was much more people-oriented and meaningful to me. |
